Naturally I support any efforts to educate the younger generation of scientists and librarians on how to make constructive use of the bibliometric and scientometric data that is available to them. I wish you all the best in your new endeavor. Best wishes.

The European Summer School for Scientometrics will promote best practices in the application of the results of quantitative studies of
science and technology. For the future of our field high quality education and training is of crucial importance.
I am convinced that the esss will contribute successfully to this mission.

As president of the ISSI (International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics) I highly welcome the esss initiative. The advantages and opportunities arising from collaboration and participation by members of several leading European institutes are manifold. Surely, students and workers in the field will benefit greatly, not only from the contents of the courses themselves but also by participating in a network of interested parties.
I wish all involved a successful partnership.

The esss is a wonderful initiative. Although bibliometrics are becoming more and more important in research evaluation, there is a general lack of appreciation of the intricacies of the different research metrics and data sources. esss will play a key role in building up expertise in this area.

The intelligent use of scientometrics, which is increasingly a must, requires rigorous training in the nooks and cranny of bibliometric methods. The esss is a timely response to this urging need, and the four organisations behind the initiative have demonstrated their professionalism in this field which is a guarantee that summer students will be exposed to sound practice and clever thinking.

The establishment of esss is very timely. The increasing use of bibliometrics for funding and evaluative purposes, and in international university rankings, makes it essential for more people to develop a detailed understanding of the disciplines strengths and weaknesses. The contributing partners in this new initiative are to be congratulated for putting together an outstanding program.
